Kutchi Language

The languages spoken predominantly in Kachchh is Kachchhi and to lesser extent Sindhi and Gujarati. Script of Kachchhi language has become extinct and it is occasionally written in  Gujarati and Devnagari(Sanskrit) script. Efforts are on to revive the original Script. Samples of Kachchhi script are available in Kachchh Museum. Increased use of Gujarati language is mainly because of it being a medium of instruction in schools. Often Kachchhi language is mistaken as dialect of Gujarati, however this is not true since Kachchhi language bears more similarity with Sindhi than Gujarati.

Kutchi language gets script
2 Aug 2009, 1511 hrs IST, AGENCIES
The Kutchi dialect, passed down the generations by lakhs of people through the spoken word, has now got a pictorial script, thanks to a city-based graphologist.

Claiming that she has last month got a copyright for the script from the Copyright Office, New Delhi, Dr Rajul Shah said, "with this, I have become the first person in the country to hold a copyright for developing an entire script".

"From the ancient time till now, India has 26 recognised scripts of writing. What I have developed is the 27th script," said Shah.

Despite the fact that Kutchi, as a dialect, has a distinct characteristic from Gujarati language, Kutchi people have to depend on Gujarati script as their history and literature has been recorded in that language.

"As a Kutchi, I used to feel that something is missing as our language did not have written script. I decided to develop a written script to see how the words we spoke could be written down," the graphologist said.

Hailing from Ahmedabad, Shah traveled length and breadth of Kutch and studied spoken language in great depths to form its script.

The script developed by Shah is in pictorial format, like the Chinese, the first such for an Indian language.

"The letters are rooted in psychological association of the area," she claimed.

For example: "K", the first letter of Kutchi script, is symbolised by a plough while "R" is inspired by a rath (chariot) and depicted with three circles with the smallest at the bottom and largest at the top. "T" is symbolised by a plus sign with dots in four spaces of the plus sign, representing the four directions.

"I tried to develop the letters after visualising what their forms would had been in the 12th century. The letters have been associated with the objects that the people would have at that time," she said.

"The script developed by me has five letters less than those available in Gujarati script as the five letters are not spoken in Kutchi," she informed.

On her script gaining acceptance among the people of Kutch, she said, "Wherever I have gone in Kutchi community, people have welcomed my work and have shown eagerness to have a written script for the language they have been speaking for generations".

She claimed that various major trusts and educational institutes run by Kutchi community people all over the country have welcomed her script and appreciated her efforts. Informing that the books written in the script developed by her would start printing from next month, Shah said, "My dream is to see Kutchi people study in their own language".

"I have plans to translate Kutchi history which has so far been written in Gujarati language to our own script," she said.
