Dattatrey Temple, Black Hill (Kala Dungar)

The Black Hill also known as “Kala Dungar” is situated almost 90 kms away from Bhuj. This hill is the highest (458 meters) hill in Kutch. The Black Hill stands out grandly as a sectional of the Great Rann overlooking the vast area, as a silent witness to the thousands of years old history of Kutch. Two ranges are available in the Black Hill: Kala Hill and Gora Hill (White Hill). Kala Hill is the northern hill and Gora hill is the southern hill. As stated in a local story of Kutch, Kala Hill was named after a saint whose face was blackened by the cruelty of a woman’s wicked eye.

Dattatreya is one of the 33 million Hindu Gods. There is a holy place of Dattatreya on the top of the hill. The range on top offers a wide observation of the gorge below and of the Great Rann of Kutch. Sunsets are most cheering of all, as the temperature drops and the crying of the winds take over, once the sun dips into the land.
An army foundation is stationed at its top, but if you have the permissions from the Police Commissioner’s Office, you can stay at the temple itself which has some room to stay. But carry your own food as the temple cook might not always be there.
Black Hill is a very holy site for the Hindus because there are temples of Lord Shiva and the community God Pachchhampir.
